On October 7, Neta Portal and her partner, Santiago, found themselves in the heart of the massacre in Kfar Aza that was perpetrated by murderous operatives of Hamas. After a heroic escape, during which Neta was severely wounded by seven bullets to her leg, she is currently in the process of complex rehabilitation. An innovative brace developed by the Biomechanical Interface Laboratory, directed by Dr. Dana Solav of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, helps her restore her ability to walk on her leg.
Dr. Amir Haim, Director of the Biomechanical Rehabilitation Unit at Loewenstein Rehabilitation Center, reached out to Dr. Solav, whom he knew from when they studied for their degrees together at the Faculty. Although the innovative brace was still in the development stages, the lab team rallied to the cause to complete development and adapt the brace to Neta’s leg. The day she received the brace at Loewenstein Rehabilitation Center, Neta was able for the first time to walk on both feet.
