The first autonomous electric vehicle developed at the Technion competed in the middle of the summer in the Formula Student Championship against hundreds of student teams from all over Europe. The new car, which was presented for the first time at the final projects’ fair at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, won second place in the static race in Spain and third place in the autonomous race in Portugal.

About 70 students from various faculties at the Technion are involved in the design and development of the vehicle: mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, physics, civil and environmental engineering, and materials science and engineering. The group is headed by Majd Jaraisi, an undergraduate student at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, who has been part of the project for four years.

The new vehicle has rear-wheel drive – a single electric motor that produces 81 HP, a total weight of 260 kg, a maximum speed of 120 km/h, and accelerates from 0 to 100 in 3.1 seconds.

The Formula Technion project was launched in 2012 at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering under the leadership of master’s student Ahmad Omari. From the very first year, the Technion team won prestigious prizes in the European competition. One of the models developed at the Technion was named the world’s lightest race car.
