Nadav Shoham Robotraffic Competition
Robotraffic is a unique robotics competition aimed at acquiring knowledge and skills in robotics related to safe driving. The competition was launched in 2010 by the Leumi Robotics Center at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In 2014, it was named after the late Nadav Shoham, an engineer and graduate of the Faculty who was killed in a snowstorm in Nepal.
Each year, 1,000 students from elementary, junior high and high schools from Israel and around the world participate in the Robotraffic competition, which covers eight categories: safe driving, advanced safe driving, racing, knowledge of driving laws, ideas in the field of road safety, implementation of signal systems and headlights, knowledge of a vehicle’s structure using automated design and a test in robot control. The teams build small mobile, car-like robots that are operated in situations that simulate driving on roads. During the competition, the robots move autonomously while preventing accidents and observing traffic rules. The competition’s arena is a model of a road with intersections, traffic lights, road signs, bridges and checkpoints.
Thanks to the cooperation with the World Zionist Organization and the World ORT, the Robotraffic competition has also gained recognition abroad. Today, Robotraffic competitions based on the Israeli concept are held in various countries around the world, led by educators in the fields of technological sciences and robotics. Each year, the winners of the competitions come to the final competition at the Technion, travel throughout Israel and visit high-tech companies.
