The James (Jimmy) Hugh Belfer Symposia series, honoring his legacy, is organized by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technion.
Jimmy Belfer was an extraordinary young man, intelligent, kind, sensitive, with a fine sense of humor. He was a loving and beloved son and a dear brother. When he was only 20 years old, he was hit and killed by a drunk boat driver while swimming in a reservoir in Colorado.
Looking for a fitting way to commemorate the memory of their son and brother, his family awarded the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering the James (Jimmy) Hugh Belfer Chair of Mechanical Engineering, and the James (Jimmy) Hugh Belfer Symposium Fund. Their choice was based on Jimmy’s love of Israel and his great interest in the mechanical world.
Since the fund’s establishment in 1989, over 20 symposia have been organized on a variety of mechanical-engineering topics. Each symposium features keynote speakers and state-of-the-art tutorials by leading international scientists. In addition, short thematic lectures and reports are presented by Israeli scientists.
The fund is managed by a representative of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
