Research Interests

My research focus centers around theory and practice of feedback control systems. Since 1989, the National Science Foundation has continuously funded my research activities in topics such as Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT), robust multivariable control, reset control, Internet congestion control, computational modeling of the master clock, and dynamics of the human thyroid. The MathWorks has marketed internationally (1995-2001) a MATLAB Toolbox on QFT Control Design that was developed in my Lab (presently marketed by Terasoft,Inc.). In recent years, my emphasis has shifted to research issues at the interface of between medicine and engineering. The aims of the proposed research are to develop models for erythropoietic response to EPO and iron and appropriate patient-specific dosing protocols. I have been involved in the development of computational models for several human bio-systems (thyroid and Ca-PTH axis) as well as of erythropoiesis. In addition, I am currently participating in pilot studies applying new clinical protocols derived from my research activities: patient-specific radioactive iodine dose in the treatment of Graves' disease and an EPO dose protocol in the treatment of anemia of end-stage renal disease.
